Consistently good specials. The hot specials are seasonal and well thought out. The hot menu items are consistent and filling. The cold sandwiches are where I hear the most people complain. I think that's where the restaurant really hasn't found a combo that avoids complaints. Yes, fries and a burger would be a great daily addition. The atmosphere is very friendly and open with options for outdoor, hightops, lowtops and even benches.

Love the atmosphere for a quick sandwich! Servers were quick and efficient. The food outstanding. The chicken salad had a wonderful extra taste of rosemary. The broccoli salad was wonderful. Try the chicken salad crusted with pecans and quickly pan-fried and served over a bed of greens. Very nice and not too pricey!

Nice little place to eat for a quick bit.

Let me say first, if you leave here hungry, it's your fault!! Everything I have ever had here from the Pimento Cheese sandwich to the Turkey sandwich is awesome! I have known the owners all my life and if something is not right or to your liking, they MAKE it right! If they have Broccoli Salad when you are there.....ORDER IT! You won't be sorry! It is the best I have ever had!!! Prices are average, remember you get what you pay for!! Not a meat and three, so don't expect that! I am from the area and now live in Metro Detroit. We have many upscale restaurants here and I have been to many. The Cafe at Williams Hardware can hold it's own with any of them! All the staff is very friendly and make you feel at ease, plus I always see several old friends when I am there! If you like down home friendliness, good food, and a place you are always welcome, try this place!! Once you go, you won't be a stranger!!! Danny Pridmore

True southern experience. The owners are two sisters raised in TR, and their roots are present in the food, ambiance, and friendly service. If you love rosemary, try the chicken salad! It's also connected to the swamp rabbit trail, so it's a great place to stop for a bite or drink on your route.

What a fun place... It really is an old hardware store and you can buy some of their interesting locally made items for gifts, etc. It's really "homey" and welcoming.... Great Southern hospitality. I had the Barbeque Chicken Quesadilla which was quite filling. Chincken, barbeque sauce, cheddar cheese... you get the picture. If you are in town, you should try this out.

We drove here today to enjoy a light lunch. It has some charm. We sat on the screened in patio porch and had the bbq special and a Reuben sandwich. Lemonade was house made. The food was good but I thought the sides were average--baked beans from a can, buns not freshly baked. Lemonade was house made and quite good. Watermelon got rave comments from my wife. On a cooler day we would have considered biking on the path from Greenville to here but it seemed out of the question today with temperature in the 90s and humidity at 133%.

Had the chilled strawberry soup which was awesome and BLT w tomatoes and lettuce. Husband had Reuben which was also very good. Great place with am awesome atmosphere and outdoor dining! Definitely worth the stop!

A very nice country style converted hardware store with a lot of character and wonderful food. Portion size is generous and the staff are helpful and attentive.

This place is AWESOME! Absolutely fantastic! This is literally the best breakfast I have ever had in my life! Just trust me- You want this lady's food! Great atmosphere! nice people! not too pricy!

We we're here for lunch. They always have a couple of specials that are not in the menu. We got the Southern fish and chips. It tasted like a fine dining experience. It came with the side of fries and Apple gargonzola slaw. Everything seemed very high quality with fresh ingredients. For dessert we got the Banana Sour Cream cake. Really good, really hight quality and fresh. Service was awesome, much better than most places. You can tell the staff morale is high too... Something I look for in a place to let me know how things are actually running. Highly recommended.

A nice lunch spot located on the swamp rabbit trail. Located in a historic hardware store the restaurant recalls its roots with a small assortment of books and pottery and other bric a brac. The food is generally good if somewhat over priced. The venue is nice the service is effective if over bearing. ProTip: skip lunch. Come for breakfast.

We stopped in at 2:00 on a Saturday for a late lunch. There were four of us, and we shared two sandwiches. They very nicely put our sandwich halves in individual baskets, which we appreciated. The Reuben was great and a fair size - but I did consider $8.25 a bit pricey for a sandwich alone, no side included. My sister and her husband enjoyed the turkey club. I also ordered a side of broccoli salad, which was delicious. Everyone was very friendly, and the gift shop had a lot of nice things from which to choose. The dessert case looked very tempting, so we may try again if we happen to be in the area.

I had the turkey reuben sandwich (not on the menu but they can make it if you ask) and a cup of vegetable soup... both were awesome. Also the potato salad is very good and prepared without a lot of salt. And they have good coffee which compliments the carrot cake. Service is friendly and fast. Nice place in an authentically old hardware store. Another plus is that they are located right on the Swamp Rabbit trail so you can bike in (about 10 trail miles from downtown).

Wonderful food. We had the okra tomato soup and blueberry goat cheese pie which were both excellent. The specials were fish and chips which was flash grilled flounder served over tomato ragu with 4 baked potato wedges. Perfect amount and so much better than fried ever has been. The other special was enchiladas which were also very good. The owners are really fun too. Definitely worth the side trip into Travelers Rest

Good cheap breakfast and super friendly people. Don't expect to be blown away by the food. You'll leave full and satiated though.

This place is a real find, and you won't find any other place like it. Rustic, homey, friendly people, and excellent food, The Café has it all. A family group of nine of us stopped here for lunch since our trip to the mountains was a wash-out (literally). I had the grilled ham sandwich with pimiento cheese on wheat-messy, but oh so delicious. I also had a side of slaw with apples and gorgonzola, which was a hit. Most everyone else in the group got the reuben (a specialty) and loved it. Mark raved about the potato salad and said it was just like his Aunt Della's from many years ago, very nostalgic. Susie and Thomas loved the okra and tomato soup, and Cathy loved the grilled cheese with bacon sandwich. Now comes the best part: dessert. All of them are homemade and will not disappoint. I had the peanut butter pie. Rich, yes. Silky, yes. Tasty, OMG, yes. I wish I had some right now. Other stand outs: Easter coconut cake, Hershey candy bar cake, pineapple pie, strawberry cake, watermelon cake with lime frosting, warm homemade brownies with vanilla ice cream, a favorite of Mark's and Joe's. This was such an unexpected surprise and treat on my trip to Greenville. I will be back for sure, and I may just have them Fed Ex a pie or cake to me in California. Thanks, Café @ Williams Hardware for a great lunch and great memory. Traveler's Rest. Who knew.

My husband and I LOVE this place. The employees are friendly and really make anyone who walks in feel welcome. The atmosphere of the place is cozy and open (those seem contradicting, but trust me). And then there's the food... Phenomenal! This is absolutely my favorite place for breakfast (weekend only, though). The corned beef hash omelette, the quiche, the biscuits & gravy...you really can't go wrong. Paired with some amazingly hearty while grain toast and the best grits I've ever had in Greenville (cross my heart!), I'm in early morning heaven here. I suggest getting there earlier than later, though...a serious line starts forming by 10am! Granted, their lunch is really very good, too. If I worked closer, I don't think I'd leave... and I don't think they'd mind. ;) Really can't say enough good about this place. Get here!

Best breakfast in the upstate! Amazing delivery and simple dishes done right. The quality and portions are generous for the price; only con we have noticed is the lack of consistency depending on the day. The omelets can vary drastically in size. Brought our NYer friend here last month and he raved that it was the best breakfast he had ever had, so much so he insisted we go back the next day before he flew home. Cute gift shop in the front of the restaurant to browse if there is a wait!

I've only eaten breakfast here and haven't tried lunch but it was amazing and is amazing each time we return! The food is very good, the coffee is even better. The staff is super friendly. Highly recommend you will not be disappointed.
(5)Joseph B.
This is one of the best breakfast places in the greenville area. Friendly staff, dog friendly, and great food. We had the fruit and yogurt parfait, french toast (get it with strawberries and whipped cream), and an omelet and everything was a hit.
(5)Stephanie H.
This is, hands-down, my favorite place to eat in TR. Their food is always excellent and it's conveniently right on the Swamp Rabbit Trail so we can ride our bikes up from Greenville to have lunch. My favorite thing on the menu has been the Apple/Gorgonzola Slaw - so good.
(4)Joe H.
I had not eaten here in more than a year as a result of a bad experience. Our party of six was disappointed at that time. A friend invited me there last week and I reluctantly went. I had a Sam Adams brew and ordered "The Best Reuben" with serious doubts. Man, was I wrong to doubt it. This was seriously the best Reuben I have had in my life. The meat was stacked high, the sandwich was hot and fresh, the bread was grilled to perfection. The beer was also ice cold. The potato salad side was also fresh. I will definitely go back as a result. Pricey at $16 for a lunch... But the beer might have been $4 or $5, not sure.

Great find. Stumbled upon this wonderful little place. Nice small town setting. My wife had a terrific Reuben sandwich. I had a chicken hot dog served with a fruit slaw that was incredible. Good service. Nice people. Fun location.

Went here for lunch today and we were impressed. Have a substantial menu with sandwiches, soups and salads. Also have great daily specials. We had the pecan chicken salad and it was excellent. Would have liked a few grapes in the salad though. We also had the mahi mahi sandwich and cauliflower soup special. Both were fantastic. Nice portions. Friendly staff and neat location. We will be back next time we are in TR.

Being not from the area, I have to admit I was kind of expecting some off-the-beaten-path restaurant in the woods, but The Cafe is actually very much central to the town and therefore the highway that passes through. I knew that it faced The Swamp Rabbit trail, but as it turns out, the trail is very shallow in this area-- it's basically just a sidewalk that runs on the backside of the buildings. Everyone here was super nice and the building is gorgeous. The food selection is extremely limited, especially for vegetarians (welcome to the South!) so I had a grilled cheese sandwich (with pimento cheese, which is apparently a big thing that I have never ever heard of) and M had a salad. The sandwich was great for the first three bites and then just felt like eating bread with processed cheddar cheese covered in mayonai....wait. That is what I was eating. And this is considered food? Well... OK.... The back patio dining was pretty, but not as naturalistic as I was imagining. You can still hear the cars roar by on the front side of the restaurant and I could see the main intersection of Traveler's Rest from my seat. So then I thought, I'll go shopping while M picks at his salad. I. Bought. Nothing. This very rarely happens. When surrounded by cookware and tchotchkes, I always find something I can't live without. For some reason the magic didn't happen here. Although it was a cool place to stop, we had such a limited time in Greenville and I wish we'd just stayed downtown.

I drove myself out on Saturday morning to walk a little bit of the Swamp Rabbit trail and try some Traveler's Rest grub. I like that The Cafe offers a nice pit stop for all of the exercisers going down the Trail. They only offer breakfast on Saturdays, so it was kind of a one time thing. The front of the shop is just a typical store with some coffee gear, books, shirts, etc. The back is a little cafe that is really casual and friendly. You order at the counter, so nothing is super expensive. I went with a biscuit and sausage gravy and a cranberry-orange muffin. The biscuit was super tender, and the crust was just crunchy enough. Sausage gravy is one of my favorite toppings, and they used a really heavy white concoction speckled with huge hunks of breakfast sausage. Great heavy breakfast for $3. The muffin was pretty disappointing, but at least the B&G made up for it. It was overly moist, and there were only 4 cranberries. I was definitely disappointed, since they bake up one mean biscuit, The Cafe is a really cool joint to have some breakfast grub in the Traveler's Rest/Greenville area. I recommend you check it out if you are into funky eateries.

Nice place to stop after bike riding. Not fine dinning, but nicely prepared food, able to eat outside in the sunshine weather permitting, and desserts too hard to resist once you've gone to the bad side! Thanks for giving us a destination for a Swamp Rabbit Trail bike ride!

The Cafe @ Williams Hardware has definitely been getting better with time. You can tell that they are still searching for their niche, somewhere between serving hearty Southern dinners and quick deli lunches while simultaneously running a small store. However, it is obvious that the owners and employees take pride in their work and care about their customers. The Cafe is in a great location, adjacent to TR's Main Street and the Swamp Rabbit Trail, and the patio seating is the perfect atmosphere on a day with nice weather. There is also live bluegrass music on some weekend nights. The lunch menu is more extensive than the dinner menu, but the dinner options are still very good. My most recent meal at TC@WH was the night of my graduation from nearby Furman University, and all seven people in our party commented on what a great dinner it was. The Southern Fried Chicken, the Shrimp and Grit cakes, and the steak were all great entrees. Both owners also stopped by to check on us and congratulated me on my graduation. I'm very glad we decided to have dinner here and not at one of the franchise restaurants down the road! I'll look forward to seeing how The Cafe @ Williams Hardware changes as time goes on. The locals can tell you--this is a great place to eat and get a feel for what Travelers Rest is all about.

Let me preface by saying I live 20+ minutes away (with lunchtime traffic) in downtown Greenville, where there are a ton of great places to eat. Even so, I have now made two 45 minute round trips to TR for the sole purpose of eating here. The first time was based on a strong recommendation and the second was because the first time was so good. I will definitely be back again as soon as I can manage. There are two ways to approach the Cafe -- by car or foot via Main St. in front or by bike or foot via the Swamp Rabbit Trail in back. When you enter you are greeted by one or both of the McCarrell sisters (the owners) who hands you a menu, explains the specials to you, and chats with you a little bit while you wait in line to order (one or two minutes tops). The menu is small, but in my view, that's a good thing. They seem to do what they do well. There are soups, sandwiches, about six sides, and four or five desserts on the lunch menu -- all homemade. There are also specials every time that are not on the menu. After you order, you must choose where to sit. There's rustic seating inside with old heart pine flooring under your feet and the original rough cut beams left exposed over your head. You can also choose to sit on the screen porch or open deck in the back if the weather is nice, both of which overlook the Trail. My first time here I had "The Best Reuben" as it's called on their menu. If you're going to call your food The Best ___, you had better be pretty sure. I was not disappointed, and I would say the reuben would be in my top two ruebens I've had if not on top altogether. I had a side of pasta salad, a slice of coconut cake, and a sweet tea. I brought my wife a black bean burger to her work that she loved. The second time I tried a special, the shrimp salad croissant, with a side of potato salad, a slice of peanut butter pie, and a sweet tea. All of it was great. I don't normally get dessert, but I find it hard to turn down a truly homemade dessert. The food comes to the table pretty quickly, then the owners will usually come by after you've had a chance to taste the food to see how you like it, and my glass of tea never went empty. I don't have a single complaint. I love good food, and I know I can get it here.

we loved this place. i had the pecan crusted chicken salad and a slice of blueberry goatcheese pie, my husband had the reuben with chips. he did complain about the prices and that the side should be included with the sandwich. the store is cute. we sat outside after biking there from swamp rabbit cafe. yum!
(5)Keith D.
I am a local, and I eat here often. I have never been disappointed there. I think it's kind of like TR's "Cheers", where everybody knows your name, or at least your face. It's not cheap, but it's worth what you pay! Breakfast is also always good! One of these days I'm going to make it to dinner there, served Thursday through Saturday nights.

Very nice southern grub in a charming location. The shrimp 'n' grits I ordered was flavorful and well-presented, and the fried chicken was crispy and succulent. The dinner offerings at Williams Hardware made my mouth very happy. However, they didn't make my stomach full-- hence the three stars. I have a very moderate appetite, and I expect to be able to eat my fill for the kind of money I plunked down at Williams Hardware; sadly, I was left wanting more despite downing a full three courses. I'm not complaining about high prices and tiny portions per se; I've eaten at many restaurants that earned the right to overcharge by providing luxurious ambiance, attentive service, all organic & ethically-raised ingredients, and a truly exceptional culinary experience. None of these were offered by Williams Hardware. If they cut their prices by 50% I'd eat there every day. At the current prices, I don't expect to ever go back.
(3)J.T. M.
It's nice to have a place right smack in the middle of TR, however this misses the mark big time. Cool little nick knacks for the house up front and seating in the back and on the deck. The sandwiches are very small and way too pricey for what you get. The bread is from a grocery store loaf and the meat is a cheap quality. The seating inside is not setup well and when they are busy the service is poor at best. While I believe they have the right idea the execution is bad. Save yourself the money and aggravation and get yourself a big sandwich from Publix up the road or Subway. Do not waste your time looking for a good meal here!! They get 1 star for being on main st TR and another 1 star for being on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. If it weren't for those two features, I'd give them ZERO stars.

I'll be generous because I do think the aura of this place is outstanding. Live bluegrass is sweet as it can be. The menu is ...... well, personally, I had the veggie burger, which is homemade, was flat out awesome but looking at what my friends ordered ... didn't appear awesome at all. So yes, the menu is very limited and .... potato chips as a side is sinful. You got to serve fries, you got to. I don't want a bag of chips, seriously. But all in all, I was still pleased with my veggie burger and the unique vibe of the place worked in its favor.

I was told by the Travelers Rest Welcome Center (Trilium) that they highly recommend The Cafe @ Williams Hardware. OK. I know. it's T.R. (Travelers Rest), but I was hungry, and my business partner and I thought "hey, it's close enough. Any food will do" Boy oh boy was I wrong. First of all, you walk into the place, you are immediately taken back by the atmosphere...clean, friendly and quaint! The first part of the restaurant has kitchen and home items for sale. Then you walk back, and there is a HUGE chalk board above the cash register explaining the menu (WHICH by the way, changes daily!). Immediately my business partner orders "Thanksgiving Day" sandwich and I order Reuben. Needless to say, neither of us were willing to share our food! OK, onto the food... 1. Sandwich is HUUUUUUGE! The breads are panini'esque grilled (olive oil, not butter), the sandwich is stuffed with meat (I saw on the menu you can add more meat for additional $, but try regular sandwich before ordering more meat) 2. It comes with a heaping side... YUM. (my potato salad was perfect! not too salty, not too mashed, red potato with skin, not too greasy) 3. Drinks are refilled before you run out. 4. Service is GREAT. 5. ITS AMAZINGLY CLEAN... 6. most importantly, IT IS DELISH! on the weekdays, they only have lunch at the moment, but are working towards opening for dinner, and brunch hours on the weekends. I look forward to going back there to enjoy the wonderful setting, and delicious food.
(5)Scott B.
This place is a bit of a rip-off. $10 for a sandwich and they expect you to pay extra for a side?! Come on, that's not cool. Menu is boring too. I'll give it two stars cause they are friendly, but I'll skip it from now on.
